Adwords: Why are there no advertisers, but costs are high or adverts are not showing?

December 9, 2024

You’ve conducted keyword research for your business and found that no AdWords ads are showing for that keyword… “Jackpot!” That’s what you might be thinking, because you’ll be advertising at a low cost. However, in reality, Google AdWords sets high bids for that keyword, and sometimes your ad doesn’t show at all!

This is a scenario we often encounter when providing Google AdWords services to our clients. Keywords that we’ve gathered and detected with no competitors’ ads often still come with high keyword bids, leading to the ad not being displayed. After discussing with fellow Google Partners in the Asia Pacific region, we’ve identified a few reasons why this happens:

Keywords Have Been Used Before

Google (and its Keyword Planner) estimates the cost of keywords by collecting data from previous usage. It’s possible that the keyword has been bid on before, meaning Google AdWords’ algorithm doesn’t see the keyword as truly new. In our experience, English keywords tend to have higher prices even if no other advertisers are bidding. This could be because advertisers are casting a wide net, causing locations like Indonesia to be affected as well.

Technical Issues

It’s possible that technical conditions are preventing your ad from being shown, even if no other advertisers are bidding on the keyword you’re targeting.

Let’s check a few things:

  1. What is the quality score for the targeted keyword?
  2. Is there enough search volume for that keyword? How relevant is the keyword to your ad?
  3. CTR (Click-through rate) – Perhaps your ad is showing, but no one is clicking on it?

If there are technical issues, focusing on improving these factors might help.

As a Google Partner, not all details regarding Google’s algorithm are fully transparent. While this is a real-life case study from our experience optimizing AdWords, we don’t believe Google is manually controlling these situations. The AdWords bidding system has benefited millions of businesses globally, and it’s a system that allows you to continue relying on Google AdWords.
