Prefer WordPress vs Joomla (or Drupal) Web Development?

wordpress vs joomla

Based on a survey from W3Tech.com (May 2016), WordPress and Joomla are the two most popular web platforms in the world. For over five years, we have studied both platforms for our web development services to clients. Below are the key takeaways from our learning.

1.Ease of Use

This is one of WordPress’s major strengths… its ease of use! With the plugins and features currently available in WordPress, we once trained one of our designers, and within just one day, a non-IT person was able to create a professional site. This contrasts with Joomla, which tends to be more complicated due to its modular platform structure, which is more sophisticated.

2.SEO

Regarding SEO (Search Engine Optimization) or ranking in the top 10 search results on Google, there is no significant difference between Joomla and WordPress. This is because Google uses a variety of factors to determine site rankings. From a setup perspective, WordPress is slightly easier, but when it comes to the impact on ranking results, both platforms do not have a substantial influence on SEO outcomes.

3.Site Performance

When discussing performance, this is where WordPress users may need to “pay the price.” Out of the box, WordPress sites that use “All-in-One” templates allow even non-programmers to design sites via drag-and-drop interfaces. However, many WordPress sites suffer from poor plugin management, memory usage, and slow loading speeds. Ultimately, you still need a technical team to optimize your site.

4.Security

Regarding security, due to its popularity, WordPress is the most targeted platform for attacks. According to a well-known site security blog (Sucuri), 78% of website attacks are aimed at WordPress platforms.

Is WordPress insecure? This isn’t really an issue of “secure or not secure,” as hacking attempts happen on all websites, regardless of the platform. However, as a WordPress site owner, you need to put extra effort into enhancing your site’s security. What we typically do is perform regular backups and filter through a Web Application Firewall to protect our sites. So far, this method has proven effective against attacks.

Conclusion

What is suitable for your website? Here are some of our suggestions.

If you need a site for a company profile or a simple online catalog, use WordPress. You may need to put in some effort to ensure good performance, as slow sites are never liked by visitors. For security, regular backups are key. You might also consider using a Web Application Firewall or WordPress security plugins, as we have done. You can ask your developer or contact us for consultation on this matter.

What about Joomla? For websites that need more features, such as a marketplace, e-commerce, or if your product catalog structure is complex, Joomla is the answer. Joomla is built purely as a CMS (Content Management System), whereas WordPress was originally designed as a blogging platform. This alone shows that Joomla is indeed better suited for building feature-rich, long-term websites.

Regarding online marketing, there is no clear winner between Joomla and WordPress, because ultimately, visitors (and Google) prefer user experience and a well-organized information structure over the platform used to build the site.
